Our Connecticut Adventures - Part 3: A Saturday Out and About
Well, another weekend, another adventure. After last weekend in Pennsylvania we had planned on doing nothing this weekend - but we were out and about again. Our plans for the day included a haircut for James and ride on the Bunny Train up in Danbury. We ended up out all day!
After much research on the internet (it's a wonderful thing), I made an appointment for James at the Shear Fun kid's salon in Monroe - about 25 minutes east of us. There are actually quite a few kid's hair places here, and this one happens to be next door to Playtime Village - an indoor children's play space. Despite James' protests, he managed to get a fine haircut while sitting on a motorcycle and watching the Wiggles. Shear Fun was like a hair salon inside a toy store - there were a ton of toys! I have noticed that if there is a store that caters to children in any way, they seem to carry Melissa and Doug puzzles - shoe store, clothing store, pet store - it doesn't matter. Melissa and Dog is a local company that makes GREAT toys and puzzles, but it is a little different to run into their toys wherever you go. Shear Fun went WAY beyond that - there were puppets, dolls, clothing, and more. There was also a small carousel, a basketball game, and one of those circular seat rides. Once I got James to leave, all of us went next door to Playtime Village.
Playtime Village is kind of like a really huge preschool classroom for kids up to 7 years old. There's a baby area, cars and trikes to ride, a large playground structure, a costume area, puppets, grocery store, books - everything you would find at a preschool - but in a room the size of a warehouse. It was pretty cool - the boys had a lot of fun. At one point James found a Batman cape that I think he wore for about half the time we were there. We played for almost 2 hours and then determined it was time to leave and get lunch.
We proceeded to that haven of health food - McDonald's, and went through the drive thru. We then pulled over in the parking lot and ate in the car with the boys strapped into their seats. It was not our intention, but I also needed to eat, and it is hard to hand food to Sam in a moving car. It actually worked out perfect though. They had just worn themselves out playing anyways.
We then realized that we left Sam's stroller in our apartment, so we drove by our apartment to pick it up before we went to the Danbury Railway Museum. We had tickets to go on the Bunny Train at the museum and knew the boys would enjoy it. After a couple of stops along the way, we arrived at the museum and picked up our tickets for the ride. While we waited the boys played with toy trains and we looked at some model trains. The boys were having a blast.
Then it was our turn to get on the train. It was just one train car, and you ride to the end of the rail yard, but it was cool for the boys. At one point we all got off the train and walked over to the turnabout and got to ride on the turnabout where they turn the trains around. James thought that was pretty cool. Once we were back at the station, we got to walk through another train and meet the Easter Bunny, take their pictures and get a coloring book and candy. All in all, a pretty cool adventure. But we weren't going home yet.
After that we went to dinner at a tasty Mexican restaurant within walking distance of the train station and then went to the Saturday evening service at our church - which was really cool, and I will tell you about in a different blog. All in all, a great day in Connecticut!
